Arsenal face fan uproar as Edu risks repeating £53m mistake with hugely unpopular contract ploy

Arsenal have always seemed to offload their best players just as the club seems to reach boiling point, whether it be Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri or Alexis Sanchez and the list goes on.

The Gunners are on the brink of boiling point once again following the emergence of Bukayo Saka and following Emile Smith Rowe's new deal in the summer, Edu must also secure the 19-year-old's future.

Smith Rowe took the no. 10 shirt and has kicked on this season with a flurry of goals and assists.

With murmurs around Saka's contract situation hitting the grapevine, Edu simply must convince another London Colney graduate into staying.

So, Chris Davison and Guy Clarke spoke live on The Arsenal Way Agenda show to delve into the prospect of Saka, whose current deal expires in 2025, falling victim to Edu's haphazard approach to contract negotiations.

Davison kickstarted proceedings by noting how Arsenal must be pro-active in their mission to compete among Europe's elite by rewarding their best players else the club risk major consequences.

"Saka and Smith Rowe are the two players in particular that we really need to build around moving forward," he said.

"We need to as a football club, not just Arteta but those above him as well, do everything it can to push forward, to succeed and get back into those European competitions and compete with the top guns.

"We need to actually prove to our most important players that we are moving forward and that we're an ambitious club because if we can't do that then that's when I'll begin to worry for the futures of several of our best players.

"I'm hopeful there won't be any sagas but you never know and it's just one of those things that you always worry about."

Clarke added by warning Arsenal that if Edu can't extend the future of Saka then the Gunners face lightning striking twice.

"It wouldn't be Arsenal without contract nervousness or if a contract saga didn't happen," he began.

"It feels to me as though Arsenal need to get into a mindset of rewarding young players for their development.

"The last 18 months has probably been the biggest leap of development for Bukayo Saka and actually for me the best bit of January transfer business would be to tie him down to a new contract rather than let him get into those final two years."

Clarke wrapped up the discussion by alluding to the mistakes Edu has made with Eddie Nketiah, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, whom worth a cumulative £53.1 million as per Transfermarkt.

"We've seen what's happened with Nketiah, what's happened with Aubameyang off the back of the FA Cup win as well where they then get towards that last year in their contract.

"Look at what's happening with Lacazette now. We've been talking about his contract situation for already more than a year as well and are still needs to get out of that habit."
