Arsenal eyeing double swoop for former and current Inter Milan pair after Brentford defeat

Arsenal are reportedly looking at an audacious double swoop involving a former and a current Inter Milan player and manager.

The Gunners suffered a 2-0 defeat at Brentford on the opening weekend of the Premier League season courtesy of goals from Sergi Canos and Christian Norgaard.

It was a disappointing performance from Mikel Arteta's side and the loss has put extra scrutiny on the Spaniard's future

According to Tuttosport, Arteta’s situation is far from being secure, and therefore the manager could be shown the door at the Gunners after just under two years in charge.

The Italian newspaper added that Antonio Conte is being lined up as his replacement should Arsenal part ways with the ex-Everton midfielder.

Conte is currently out of work after leaving the Serie A champions at the end of the season and it would mean a first return to management in England since he departed Chelsea in 2018.

The idea would be to appoint Conte and sign Lautaro Martinez who has previously been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium from Inter this summer.

This would mean a reunion after the pair helped the Nerazzurri to their first Italian league title in 11 years.

Although Inter have insisted that Martinez isn't for sale, they are in financial trouble and have already been forced to sell Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi for over £150 million combined.

Neither Alexandre Lacazette or Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang featured against the Bees on Friday night and Arsenal have been on the lookout for a new centre forward, with Tammy Abraham among those linked.

With Chelsea and Manchester City to face in their next two fixtures, Arteta could be under even more pressure if they start the season with three successive defeats.
