Arsenal exile Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang eyeing Gabon start against Ghana at AFCON after Covid-19

Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is hoping to play for Gabon against Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations on Friday night after recovering from Covid-19.

Aubameyang - who has been frozen out at Arsenal since being stripped of the captaincy last month in the aftermath of a disciplinary breach - tested positive for the virus after arriving in Cameroon from Dubai for the tournament earlier this month.

The 32-year-old was duly forced to isolate and he missed Gabon’s opening game of AFCON against Comoros on Monday.

Gabon won 1-0 in his absence thanks to Aaron Boupendzas’ goal and now Aubameyang is hoping to return to action for Friday’s Group C meeting with Ghana, which will see him come up against his Arsenal team-mate Thomas Partey.

Aubameyang trained on Wednesday as normal, while former Fulham and Southampton midfielder Mario Lemina was also back in action.

Gabon, however, have been hit by more Covid cases in their camp and will be without more players for the clash with Ghana - who lost their opening game to Morocco on Monday.
