Arsenal evening headlines as Shkodran Mustafi close to exit and Houssem Aouar transfer priority

Good evening, Arsenal fans. Here are your evening headlines for Monday, September 21.

Gary Neville delivers verdict on Arteta’s Arsenal

Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville has praised Mikel Arteta for the work he’s doing at Arsenal, and suggested he’s overachieving with the players at his disposal.

After delivering the FA Cup and Community Shield with wins at Wembley either side of the Gunners’ short summer break, it’s two wins from two in the Premier League.

"I think Mikel Arteta is punching above his weight," said Neville on his podcast . "He is going above and beyond the players he has. The shape and the organisation, things we have criticised Arsenal for in the past, is good

"They are not finishing in the top four like Arsene Wenger used to get criticised for but they look like a team which is more cohesive. It has continued from the end of last season and he is doing a great job.

"I just think Mikel Arteta would love that £150 million that Frank Lampard has got this summer."

Arteta’s transfer priority revealed

There’s still two weeks until the extended 2020 transfer window closes, and Arteta is hoping the club can get more business done.

Gabriel Magalhaes and Willian have arrived at the Emirates so far this summer, alongside William Saliba after his season-long loan back to Saint-Etienne, and the Gunners manager is hoping for at least one more addition to his midfield.

Lyon’s Houssem Aouar and Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey both remain on the list of targets, but the club may need to sell before they can buy. football.london understands no progress has been made in their attempts to cash in on Matteo Guendouzi, while Lucas Torreira has drawn interest from Atletico Madrid and Torino.

Here’s all the latest on the transfer situation .

Lazio eye Mustafi

Lazio are considering a move for Arsenal centre-half Shkodran Mustafi, according to Italian outlet Corriere della Sera (via Sport Witness ).

The former Germany international has fallen down the pecking order in terms of Arteta’s preferred defensive options following the arrival of Gabriel and could be allowed to leave for the right price as he enters the final year of his contract with Arsenal.

It’s said that the Serie A club are looking to bolster their defence after qualifying for the Champions League, and have long targeted the 28-year-old since his time at Sampdoria.

The report goes on to state that the Gunners defender is Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi’s preference ahead of Southampton’s Wesley Hoedt, who has also been linked.
