Arsenal evening headlines as Guendouzi sends warning and Lingard delivers transfer stance

Here are your Arsenal evening headlines for Tuesday, April 7.

Guendouzi warns of premature Premier League return

Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has urged the Premier League not to return too early as the coronavirus epidemic continues.

The season has postponed indefinitely but there is still hope that the 2019-20 campaign will be completed, even if it has to be behind closed doors.

But that may yet be weeks away, and Guendouzi has insisted there should be no unnecessary rush to start playing again.

Will Arsenal overhaul their defence?

"For me, what I think is most important is to not start things up again, no games, no training, until this epidemic stops," the 20-year-old told Telefoot.

"What's most important is everybody’s health, and not just in the football world, but in the medical world and the world in general. That’s really what’s most important.

"I'm in favour of nothing starting up again until this virus is taken off this world."

He added: "For now, the orders have been clear. There's nothing at all. No training, no games, and not for a while. We know the United Kingdom took measures a bit after France, which means this period is starting to be very difficult here.

"There's a lot of people who are starting to die from this virus. I don't know if we’re at the start or just in the middle, but we know it’s not the end of this virus, so we know it’s not going to start back up just yet.

Lingard makes future hopes clear amid Arsenal interest

Jesse Lingard would prefer to stay at Manchester United despite reported interest from Arsenal.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a potential move to North London amid speculation that United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is willing to sell.

But the Metro have reported that Lingard has no interest in a move to the Emirates.

The England international is out of contract in 12 months and is expected to run down his deal at United.

And some Arsenal fans took to social media to react to the update on Lingard’s future.

One wrote: “I'll pay Lingard with my own money to step away from Arsenal,” while another posted: “This is my favourite story of the year so far.”

FA chairman discusses future of Premier League season

FA chairman Greg Clarke has admitted the Premier League season “may not finish” due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Football has been indefinitely postponed across the world and it is not clear when it will be safe to resume the current campaign.

Clarke, speaking after a meeting with the FA Council, highlighted potential contingency plans.

"Returning to the issue of uncertainty, no one knows how long the lock down will last and what social distancing measures will endure even when the daily rate of infection is much reduced,” he said.

"Our Government is rightly cautious as human life is at stake and prudence is our only sensible option.

"We are committed to finishing the professional football season as this resolves the issues of promotion and relegation together with title winners on merit. However, we may not be able to finish the season as football is not our priority, human life is, and we will do as the Government directs as the pandemic unfolds.",

He added: "Football faces economic challenges beyond the wildest imagination of those who run it. The pandemic will be followed by its economic consequences and all business sectors will suffer.

"We face the danger of losing clubs and leagues as finances collapse. Many communities could lose the clubs at their heart with little chance of resurrection.

"In the face of this unprecedented adversity, all the stakeholders within the game from players, fans, clubs, owners and administrators need to step up and share the pain to keep the game alive.”
