Arsenal edging closer to Ben White transfer as Gunners defender assesses options

William Saliba is assessing his options ahead of the new season as Arsenal close in on the signing of Ben White, football.london understands.

Arsenal are in talks with Brighton over signing England defender White but had their opening £40million bid rejected last week.

20-year-old Saliba joined the Gunners in 2019 from Saint-Etienne for around £30million, but has not made a single competitive appearance for the club's senior side yet after two successive loan spells.

The defender was loaned to Saint-Etienne after being signed before joining Ligue 1 rivals Nice on a temporary deal last season, where he was named as January Player of the Month in his first few weeks at the club.

football.london has been told by multiple sources that Saliba could be sold this summer, despite initial suggestions that he was likely to be given an opportunity to impress in the first team next season.

It has also been suggested that his age is another reason why manager Mikel Arteta is reluctant to throw him into the team, although the Spaniard has always publicly maintained that a loan move was the best option for the Frenchman's development.

Saliba is considered as part of the former regime which will see a number of players leave in the coming weeks, including Granit Xhaka, Dinos Mavropanos, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira.

"You will see in the summer, the possible replacement [for David Luiz]," said Arteta at the end of last season.

"William is our player for sure and that's the decision we're going to be taking soon.

"When we finish the season we will sit down and discuss the roles of every member in our squad and how they can fulfil that role.

"He is our player so he'll be back here for sure. After that, we will make a decision based on an agreement of the role each player is going to have in our squad."

Sources close to Saliba have told football.london that they are 'assessing what is best' for the defender ahead of the new season.

There remains the possibility that an obligation to buy clause could be inserted in any loan deal that is signed off by the club.

Meanwhile, Lucas Torreira has agreed personal terms with Lazio but the Italian side still need to agree a fee with Arsenal.

Sead Kolasinac is also expected to depart with Fenerbahce the latest team to show serious interest in the Bosnian defender.

However, Emile Smith Rowe is not expected to be going anywhere with further contract talks over a new extension expected over the coming weeks.
