Arsenal duo's fight during Burnley win shows Mikel Arteta is instilling a backbone

Arsenal have shown defensive qualities since the return of the international break which the fans are not used to.

The Gunners have kept back-to-back clean sheets in the Premier league without facing a serious threat of conceding

The solidarity of the new-look defence for Arsenal was epitomised by the mini-squabble between Kieran Tierney and Aaron Ramsdale in the second half of the victory against Burnley.

Both defenders were fighting their case on who should have cleared the ball out from the cross.

This is passion from defenders that Arsenal fans are not used to and it is a refreshing sight for us considering the weak defending the club has been accustomed to in recent years.

It also shows the backbone of Aaron Ramsdale which is a credit to his mentality that he is able to stand his ground against Tierney who is one of the more senior players at the club.

And the notion of not having a backbone has always been a major criticism of the Arsenal defence and it looked to continue way at the start of the season having conceded nine goals in the first three Premier League games.

However, the fortunes are completely different when Ramsdale is bought into the side.

The £30m signing has now played three matches for the Gunners and has kept three clean sheets. The goalkeeper did not concede against West Bromwich Albion, Norwich City and Burnley.

Since making his debut he has had nothing but praise. Even Sky Sports pundit, Paul Merson admitting he was wrong about his signing as he said: “He has been absolutely outstanding. I have been one of his biggest critics. He has definitely been outstanding today [against Burnley].”

Arsenal finally have a defence that looks as though they can withstand pressure and the incident between Tierney and Ramsdale occurred after an influx of crosses from Burnley.

There have already been signs in the early days of this young and promising defensive line-up that shows Arsenal have secured a solid backline for the future.
