Arsenal will face Turkish club Besiktas in the Champions League play-off round. Arsène Wenger’s side will travel to Istanbul for the first leg of the tie on Tuesday 19 August, with the return at the Emirates the following Wednesday.
Arsenal have never previously met Besiktas in any European competition. The Turkish side are managed by the former West Ham defender Slaven Bilic, and recently signed Demba Ba from Chelsea. Ba scored a hat-trick in Besiktas’s 3-1 second-leg victory over Feyenoord in the previous round, which gave his side a 5-2 aggregate victory.
Celtic’s Champions League reprieve earned them a clash with the Slovenian champions Maribor. The Scottish league winners were beaten 6-1 on aggregate by Legia Warsaw in the previous round but the Polish side were punished for fielding an ineligible player.
The other stand-out tie of the round pits Rafael Benítez’s Napoli against Athletic Bilbao, with the first leg in Naples.
Tottenham will face the Cypriot side AEL Limassol in the final play-off round of the Europa League. Mauricio Pochettino’s first European match in charge of Spurs will come in Cyprus on 21 August, with Limassol travelling to north London the following Thursday. Hull’s reward for a narrow win over Slovakian’s Trencin in the previous round is a tie against the Belgians Lokeren. Legia Warsaw will meet Kazakh side FC Aktobe.
