Arsenal deliver huge Lucas Torreira injury update ahead of Gunners return

Arsenal have issued a positive update on the fitness of midfielder Lucas Torreira after the Uruguay international suffered an ankle injury back in March.

The 24-year-old, who made the switch to the Emirates Stadium in July 2018, signing from Italian outfit Sampdoria, was forced off with a fractured ankle just 16 minutes into the Gunners' 2-0 FA Cup triumph over Portsmouth at Fratton Park after being challenged by Pompey defender James Bolton.

Following the game, which saw Arsenal set up a quarter-final tie with Sheffield United, though when that could be played remains anyone's guess because of the coronavirus outbreak, the Gunners confirmed the extent of the injury Torreira had sustained, insisting that he would be sidelined for anywhere between eight to 10 weeks.

Arsenal: The season so far

However, the suspension of the season because of the COVID-19 crisis, of course, came at the perfect time for the central midfielder, who has netted two goals in all competitions for the Gunners this term, as it has allowed him to get back to full strength without missing too much action - just one match.

Now, Arsenal have issued an encouraging update on the state of Torriera's recovery, releasing a video of the midfielder back on the grass and running.

A tweet from the Gunners on Tuesday morning, which showed a video of Torreria, read: "Things we love to see. @LTorreira's back out running again."

Yesterday's announcement from the Government, which confirmed that no professional sporting events can take place before June 1, could prove to be further good news for Torreira, as it suggests that the Premier League could be granted permission to resume at some point next month, though no official decision on when competitive football could resume in England has yet been made.

This season, Torreira has racked up 33 appearances in all competitions for the Gunners, scoring two goals in the process.
