Arsenal defender William Saliba emerges as reported loan target for Newcastle United

Arsenal defender William Saliba has emerged as a loan target for Newcastle United, according to reports.

The 20-year-old joined Arsenal from Saint Etienne in the summer of 2019 but has spent 18 months of his first two seasons with the Gunners on loan in France with Les Verts, as well as Nice.

The French youth international is said to be waiting on Mikel Arteta's decision to see whether he fits into the North London side's first team plans this season.

Interest is mounting up for Saliba and he won't be short of loan suitors should Arsenal choose to let him go.

Newcastle are in the market for a centre-half this summer and could turn to the Frenchman if their pursuit of Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer is unsuccessful, according to Mail Online.

The Magpies, of course, loaned Joe Willock from Arsenal last season to great success and that should stand them in good stead should their interest in Saliba become more concrete.

Newcastle are well stocked at centre-half with Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, Ciaran Clark and Federico Fernandez but are keen to sign a younger option that leaves them well equipped if Steve Bruce persists with playing three central defenders next season.

The club will listen to offers for Florian Lejeune, who will return from a successful loan spell at Alaves this summer, with one year remaining on his current deal on Tyneside.
