Arsenal defender David Luiz to be out for ‘a few weeks at least’ and could have knee surgery

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has refused to rule out David Luiz undergoing knee surgery and fears the defender could be out “for a few weeks at least”.

Luiz missed Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Liverpool due to a knee issue and the Brazilian could now be set for a spell on the sidelines too.

Arteta revealed after the match the 33-year-old may require surgery to get back fit, with Arsenal currently deciding what to do.

“We don’t know. There are a few possibilities on that - being a little bit more conservative with the treatment or having to go through a surgery,” said Arteta.

“We are talking with the doctors right now to make the right decision on that. But it looks like he can be out for a few weeks at least.”

Luiz, who is into the final year of his contract, has been a regular for Arsenal this season and impressed in the heart of defence.
