Arsenal defender 'already repaying transfer fee' as teammate told he 'has no future at club'

Ben White repaying £50m fee

New Arsenal signing Ben White has big shoes to fill as he replaces David Luiz at the heart of the team's defence this season – but the early signs have been good.

It was clear that Luiz's replacement needed to not only be a solid defender but also a player able to influence the side from deep locations when Arsenal are in possession.

His statistics last season weren't quite as strong as Luiz, but Edu and his staff clearly believe that White has the capacity to up these contributions for Arsenal, and both he and Arteta spoke glowingly of White’s impressive passing range shortly after his arrival was announced.

Wilshere set for Gunners return?

Ex-Arsenal favourite Jack Wilshere appears keen for a return to the club.

Wilshere joined the Gunners in 2007 after moving from Luton Town's academy and he went on to spend 11 years in north London - becoming a real fan favourite in the process, making a total of 211 appearances at all levels.

Arteta, who played with Wilshere for five years between 2011 and 2016 at the Emirates Stadium, has insisted that the former Arsenal star is more than welcome to train with his squad while he continues to look for a new club.

On the offer, Wilshere said: "Being around good players, training with world-class players and as well just being in a team environment is something that I'm interested in and I'm sure I'll have a conversation with someone at the club over the next couple of days."

Defender 'told he has no future at club'

One Arsenal defender's future at the club appears closely tied to whether Mikel Arteta remains as manager.

Arsenal have plans in principle ready for William Saliba once returns from his loan at Marseille following the Frenchman's glowing displays in Ligue 1, football.london's Chris Wheatley understands.

Upon the 20-year-old's return to north London, a decision will have been made as to whether Saliba is offered a new contract or not with his current deal at Arsenal expiring in 2024.

However, having signed under Unai Emery, Saliba returned to London Colney with new management at the helm in the shape of Arteta who overlooked the defender's ability and shipped him out on loan to Marseille.
