Arsenal dealt Odsonne Edouard blow in search for Aubameyang replacement

Arsenal have been dealt a blow in their search for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's replacement after Odsonne Edouard opened talks over a new deal with Celtic.

The Gunners have been linked with a move for the 22-year-old striker amid continued speculation that top scorer Aubameyang is set to leave the Emirates this summer.

French striker Edouard has smashed in 27 goals and recorded 19 assists in all competitions for the Scottish Premier League champions this season.

His exploits have attracted the attention of Leicester and Wolves as well as Mikel Arteta's Arsenal.

But Celtic boss Neil Lennon is determined to keep hold of the striker, and confirmed the club has entered talks with his agents over a new deal.

"There are discussions at the minute with his [Edouard’s] representatives," said Lennon in quotes reported by Metro.

"Ultimately he’s a player we want around. He’s a fantastic player.

"He’s really blossomed over the last couple of seasons. He had a magnificent season this year and we want to keep him.

"It’s as simple as that. We’re doing everything we can to keep him here for at least another season anyway."

Asked if Edouard was happy at Celtic, Lennon said: "I think he is. I think he’s got a fantastic relationship certainly with me and my backroom team and his team-mates.

"You can see how much the supporters appreciate him as well. I think that’s reciprocated.

"He’s grown into a top-class striker. Of course, there is going to be speculation around a player of that quality. But we’re comfortable at the minute with the position we’re in with him."

Aubameyang's contract with Arsenal expires next summer, and the Gunners must weigh up whether to cash in on him this summer or risk losing him for nothing in a year's time.

The 30-year-old Gabon international has been linked with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris-Saint Germain.
