Arsenal could sign one of Rio Ferdinand's five dream Man United transfer targets

Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey continues to be heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in the summer transfer window.

Partey has established himself as one of the best players in his position in Europe, and the Gunners are thought to be weighing up a move at the end of the season.

Arsenal have favoured a midfield partnership of Granit Xhaka and Dani Ceballos in recent weeks, but the Spaniard's loan deal from Real Madrid expires at the end of the campaign, and Gunners boss Mikel Arteta will need a replacement.

football.london  understands the Ghana international is intrigued by the prospect of joining Arsenal, but the 27-year-old would not come cheaply, with a reported £50million price tag.

Mikel Arteta on Thomas Partey and transfer plans

And former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand included Partey on a list of targets that his old club should look to target in the summer window.

"I'd maybe go get [Thomas] Partey from Atletico Madrid or [Wilfred] Ndidi from Leicester," Ferdinand said on The Beautiful Game podcast in April.

"I like Saul Niguez. He’s a very, very good player in midfield."

He added: "And then a centre-back, they still need a centre-back.

"Whether you go for a young one like a Ben Godfrey or someone like [Kalidou] Koulibaly. I don’t know, it’s difficult."

Arteta was recently asked about the possibility of still completing a deal for Partey, but played down the suggestions of a move.

"At the moment, just to predict what is going to happen in the transfer window is impossible," he said.

"You can see one or two clubs doing these sorts of deals, but the rest if really, really quiet.

"As I told, we have to assess the financial situation and whether we have a very narrow gap or a bigger gap to do any deals.

"So I think we are going to have to wait another four to six weeks to see what we are able to do."
