Arsenal could miss out on £70m-rated striker as Newcastle United make their move

Arsenal's summer transfer window was subject to plenty of scrutiny as Mikel Arteta splashed plenty of cash on a group of up and coming talents.

Ben White, Aaron Ramsdale, Martin Odegaard, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Nuno Tavares and Takehiro Tomiyasu all made the move to north London for a combined total of £142 million.

Planning for the future with such signings is always worthy of praise but with the Gunners sat in 12th place in the Premier League table with eight matches played, the pressure to improve immediately is starting to build again.

A lack of goals has been a consistent source of frustration for fans this season.

Arteta's side failed to find the net in any of their opening three top-flight games and have scored just 12 in total, 15 fewer than top-scorers Liverpool.

As such, it is no big surprise that director of football, Edu, is starting to look at ways those figures can be improved and a plan seems to be formulating.

One possibility appears to be to get rid of Alexandre Lacazette, either in January or when his contract expires in the summer, and another is to bring in a younger, more in form goalscorer.

The name top of that list is Dominic Calvert-Lewin. According to a report in The Sun, the England international is top of the Gunners list of potential signings, along with Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins.

However, trouble may be on the horizon.

Newcastle United, fresh from their big-money takeover, are also eyeing a move for Calvert-Lewin as they look to assert their presence at the top-end of the table.

A report from The Telegraph indicates that the 24-year-old is highly thought among both the current Magpies hierarchy and those likely to be appointed at St. James' Park.

Arsenal were recently sent a warning with regards to Calvert-Lewin from Carlton Palmer, who told This Is Futbol that the Gunners had no chance in signing the striker unless they were willing to pay: "60million or £70 million."

With Steve Bruce having now been sacked by the Magpies, any decision on a Calvert-Lewin pursuit may well rest with his replacement.
