Arsenal 'consider triggering £34m release clause' as they eye Jonathan Tah transfer

Arsenal have reportedly made Bayer Leverkusen star Jonathan Tah their top defensive target.

New Gunners boss Mikel Arteta remains on the lookout for a new centre-back despite landing Pablo Mari in January.

RB Leipzig youngster Dayot Upamecano has long been touted as a target amid rival interest from Bayern Munich.

But Bundesliga rival Tah is now on Arsenal's radar, according to Sport Bild, was the club consider triggering his £34million release clause.

Tah, 24, is also attracting interest from Atletico Madrid and has made over 150 appearances for Leverkusen, also winning nine caps for Germany since 2016.

The club will have to act by June to activate his release clause, which expires in June.

Upamecano has also been considered high on Arsenal's wanted list, with a release clause of £41.5million for the Frenchman.

Speaking ahead of Leipzig's Champions League clash with Tottenham, Upamecano declared he has plenty of interest and will assess his options at the end of the season.

He said: "There are several clubs that want me.

"I will speak with my agents and my parents at the end of the season and we will make the right decision."

Arteta has identified a need to strengthen Arsenal's defence since taking over from Unai Emery at the end of 2019.

He landed Pablo Mari from Flamengo in January and will also welcome summer signing William Saliba to the club after his season-long loan at Saint-Etienne.

But he is targeting further reinforcements to strengthen a defence which has continued to leak goals during Arsenal's miserable campaign.
