Arsenal confirmed team news vs Manchester City as Tomiyasu starts but Nketiah absent

Takehiro Tomiyasu returns to the Arsenal side to start their Premier League clash with Manchester City at the Emirates on New Year's Day.

The Japanese international had been a doubt after testing positive for COVID-19, which saw him miss the 5-0 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road on Boxing Day.

However, despite not being pictured in training he has returned to the starting XI for today's game against Pep Guardiola's side.

That is the only change from the side that won so comfortably against the Canaries although they face an all together different test against the Premier League table toppers.

They will have to do it without their manager Mikel Arteta who is absent from the touchline after testing positive for COVID for a second time. Albert Stuivenberg will lead the side on the dugout in his place.

The Gunners will also be without Eddie Nketiah who is absent from the matchday squad after testing positive himself for COVID.

There is again no place in the starting XI for Emile Smith Rowe who is forced to settle for a place on the bench, but with his fine record as a substitute recently, he will still be hoping to impact the game.

Arsenal starting XI vs Manchester City: Ramsdale; Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney; Partey, Xhaka; Saka, Odegaard, Martinelli; Lacazette (c).

Substitutes: Leno, Holding, Cedric, Tavares, Maitland-Niles, Sambi Lokonga, Elneny, Smith Rowe, Pepe
