Arsenal confirm signing of £30m goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Sheffield United

Arsenal have completed the signing of Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in a deal worth up to £30million.

The 23-year-old impressed in the Premier League with Bournemouth during the 2019/20 season and was signed by the Blades after the Cherries were relegated last summer.

However, despite a decent season that saw him named the club’s player of the year, Ramsdale was relegated for the second year in succession as Sheffield United finished bottom - the third relegation of the young goalkeeper’s career.

The England U21 keeper was still called up to Gareth Southgate’s senior squad for Euro 2020 squad this summer after Manchester United’s Dean Henderson withdrew through injury, though he is yet to win a cap.

Bringing in a goalkeeper has been one of Mikel Arteta’s major priorities this summer, with the Gunners woefully short in the position heading into the new season.

Icelandic ‘keeper Alex Runarsson was signed last summer following the sale of Emi Martinez to Aston Villa but Arteta failed to bring in a more experienced backup to Bernd Leno and Runarsson looked out of his depth when called upon.

That led to the January loan signing of Mat Ryan from Brighton, but the Australian joined LaLiga side Real Sociedad earlier this summer.

Along with Runarsson, Arthur Okonkwo, promoted from the academy over the summer, had been the only other goalkeeper in Arsenal’s first team squad prior to Ramsdale’s arrival, while it was academy stopper Karl Hein who sat on the bench for last Friday’s season-opening defeat to Brentford.
