Arsenal confirm first summer transfer ahead of Mikel Arteta's squad overhaul

Arsenal have confirmed the departure of defender Dinos Mavropanos to Vfb Stuttgart on a permanent transfer. The Greek has spent the current campaign on loan with the German side and his stay has now been extended on a full-time basis.

The deal is subject to clearance and will become official on July 1 2022, ending the 24-year-old's four-year spell with at the Emirates. This season has seen Mavropanos make 31 Bundesliga appearances and score an impressive four goals, helping Stuttgart steer clear of relegation trouble.

Writing in a statement on the club's official website, Arsenal said: "Dinos Mavropanos has joined Bundesliga side Vfb Stuttgart in a permanent transfer. We thank Dinos for his contribution and wish him all the best with Vfb Stuttgart."

Mavropanos himself took to Twitter later in the evening to say his own goodbye, writing: "Arsenal was the first milestone in my career. I learned a lot, I improved as a player and as a person. I made friends and experienced great support. Thanks to everyone at the club and I wish the team success always."

Arsenal are set for a busy transfer window as Mikel Arteta continues to put his stamp on the Gunners squad. Last year saw the Spaniard splash over £140million on new arrivals including Martin Odegaard, Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White.

Next season will see the demands of European football return to the Emirates and Arteta is eager to be prepared. Recruits in attack, midfield and defence are all expected in north London and the manager is aware of the challenge ahead.

“The Champions League and the Europa League both require a much larger squad because the amount of games is much bigger," Arteta told a press conference early this season. “If we can afford it financially and we don’t have to do the turnaround in the squad that we’ve had to, what I want is 22 outfield players and three goalkeepers.

“A lot of things have to be put in place and that takes time, so I am expecting a busy summer.”
