Arsenal 'close' on winger transfer after impressing Mikel Arteta in two-week trial

Arsenal are closing in on the signature of teenager George Lewis on a free transfer.

The Norwegian winger has had a two-week trial with the Gunners and looks to have done enough to secure a contract.

He is available for nothing having left former club Tromso and was a guest at Arsenal when they beat West Ham 1-0 back in March, claims the Metro.

The north London side are in advanced talks with Lewis who has spent his recent career playing in Norway's lower leagues. Prior to that though he played at Portman Road with Ipswich.

Should the move go through he will team up with the club's U23s who are led by Steve Bould.

Unlike Gabriel Martinelli and Matteo Guendouzi, Lewis will have to work his way into the first team picture.

The coronavirus pandemic has had a huge knock on affect on club finances with Arsenal set to pursue free transfers and swap deals in the coming months.

Head of football Raul Sanllehi said recently that adding new faces this summer was not a "priority".

Last summer former manager Unai Emery was thought to be working with a budget dwarfed by Arsenal's rivals.

The Spaniard still managed to embark on a summer spree of over £100m which included the club-record purchase of Nicolas Pepe.

Mikel Arteta is unlikely to do likewise however and his focus may be on retaining Arsenal's top players.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's future remains uncertain with contract talks having to be put on hold due to the lockdown.

Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea are all linked with the Gabon international who has been the Gunners' main source of goals since joining in 2018.
