Arsenal chiefs slammed for poor contract management as Bukayo Saka's deal runs down

Arsenal have been criticised for allowing Bukayo Saka's contract to run down as the youngster is linked with a move away.

The Gunners are still trying to tie down the 18-year-old to a new deal but have not succeeded thus far.

But Peter Crouch has questioned why they have allowed the situation to reach this stage while having "players who don’t want to be there" on lucrative deals.

Saka has been among the best performers for the north Londoners this term but is about to enter the final year of his deal.

"I would be concerned (his contract)," Crouch said on BT Sport. "It’s happened time and time again at Arsenal – I don’t know who is in charge of contracts at Arsenal but he needs to be sorted.

"They are giving big, big contracts to players who don’t want to be there and haven’t sorted someone out with immense potential like Saka.

"There are some players that lack desire at Arsenal and he is shining light. They should be tying down these young stars."

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal's leading goalscorer, is also about to enter the final year of his deal.

Aaron Ramsey quit the Emirates last summer and joined Juventus on a free.

Arsenal are now trying to protect against similar scenarios happening and will look to offload players who have 12 months remaining on their contracts.

That could leave them in a difficult scenario with regards to Saka, who has come in for high praise from Rio Ferdinand.

He said: "What’s more impressive is he has played, left back, left mid, right midfield, right back the other day. Now he’s playing midfield. He’s producing wherever he is asked to play."
