Arsenal chiefs ramp up Bukayo Saka contract talks as Mikel Arteta makes Olympiacos decision

Arsenal will hold further contract talks with Bukayo Saka this week, according to reports.

The 18-year-old was one of the Gunners' standout performers in the 4-0 win over Newcastle at the Emirates, supplying an assist for Nicolas Pepe's goal in the second half and helping to keep a clean sheet from his new-found role at left-back.

Saka's impressive form since breaking into the Arsenal first team has reportedly alerted a host of clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

And with the England youth international only having 18-months remaining on his £3,000-a-week deal in north London, The Athletic claim that talks are underway to secure his long-term future at the club, with a five-year contract on the table.

According to the report, Arsenal's director of football operations Huss Fahmy has made it a priority, with more discussions planned this week.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta insisted he has been impressed with the progress Saka has made along with the other Arsenal youngsters and feels new contracts are part of the rewards they deserve.

"I'm really happy with how they (the young players) are developing," he said.

"Part of their development is to improve their contract and tie them to the club but I have to follow a natural process.

"We have Raul (Sanllehi), we have Edu (Gaspar), Vinai (Venkatesham) and Huss (Fahmy) who are in charge of that and I’m sure we will do the right thing when players deserve improved contracts."

A natural winger, Saka has played out of position at left-back in recent months after the injuries to Sead Kolasinac and Kieran Tierney.

Asked whether he could be a long term option in that position, Arteta said: "I think he could (have a future at left-back) because he’s willing to learn, he is applying himself big time he is someone that's has never played (that position) before but he’s really trying to do it as well as possible," the Arsenal head coach said in January.

"You can see that he’s got many strengths to play in that position. Obviously he needs games, he needs experience and he needs to improve in some areas but that's very good."

Arsenal next travel to Greece to face Olympiacos in the first leg of their last-32 Europa League tie, and according to The Athletic, Saka is set to be part of the squad.
