Arsenal chief Vinai Venkatesham issues Mikel Arteta statement amid sack warning

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has been given a public vote of confidence by Gunners chief Vinai Venkatesham.

The manager has endured plenty of criticism in recent weeks as he builds up to his one-year anniversary with the club.

Arteta re-joined Arsenal on December 20 and has since lifted the FA Cup, Charity Shield and graduated from his Europa League group with a clean sweep of six wins from six.

But it is his Premier League performances that have seen him come under fire.

The Gunners are currently down in 15th, 11 points behind North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and well adrift of the European qualification places.

They have scored just ten goals in 11 games and have even been tipped for a relegation battle by a tongue-in-cheek Roy Keane.

But Arsenal are confident that they have the right man, says Venkatesham.

"With Mikel we have got a number of things," he told The Times.

"You’ve got an individual who has extraordinary experience in the Premier League across his time at Arsenal, Everton, Man City and then back at Arsenal.

"You have got a guy that loves this club and understands what it means to play for this club, and he was obviously captain here. You’ve got a guy who is a real team player.

"The team he’s formed with Edu [the technical director], and also his technical staff, is really, really strong.

"You’ve got a guy who is absolutely driven to succeed and be successful on the pitch, but doing it in a way that respects our history and traditions.

He added: "So I think with him we have got a really, really powerful individual."

Arsenal are without a win in the Premier League since early November and will be looking to return to winning ways on Sunday against Burnley.

And picking up points could prove crucial before a tough run of games against high-flying Southampton, Everton, Manchester City (EFL Cup) and Chelsea.

Watford striker Troy Deeney has already warned that failing to get a result against Sean Dyche's side could see Arteta under pressure to keep hold of his job.

He told talkSPORT: “Arsenal are in trouble. I’m happy for them that they are at home, but if they were playing Burnley away this week I’d be very nervous for them.

“I think he [Arteta] has to come under criticism, ultimately because of where they are.

“For me, and I’ll go out on a limb here, if they lose [to Burnley] he is massively under pressure.

“I’d be surprised, if they lose and the ones around them win, and they are looking more backwards than upwards, he would be under pressure to keep his job.”
