Arsenal chief Edu hits back at Willian criticism as fans demand January transfer

Arsenal technical director has defended Willian's form amid concerns about the winger's recent performances.

The Brazilian started his Gunners career with a bang after providing three assists for the club against Fulham on the opening day of the Premier League season.

But the 32-year-old is yet to add to that tally and he hasn't scored in the 15 games he has played for Arsenal so far this term.

This has led to some criticism from supporters since his move across London from Chelsea this summer on a three-year deal.

Despite the backlash, Edu has backed the winger, saying he can come good.

This comes at a time when La Liga side Real Betis are reportedly interested in signing Willian, according to Spanish outlet La Razon.

“Listen, everybody knows Willian," said Edu, via the Mirror.

"If people say that he’s not a good footballer then maybe they don’t know football because he has always performed at the top, top level. Then he moved.

"For me, Willian is a question of time to be performing how we know he can.

“What do you expect? Do you expect it straight away? Boom! Willian can be the best one?

"But he needs a little bit of time, it’s strange as well to say that but you need time to know the players who you are going to play with.

“Sometimes you receive the ball in positions, sometimes in other positions, Mikel wants to play forwards, the other one wants to play to the side, there’s a little bit of adaptation.

"Players need time to understand how to train, how to work with the people, to understand a lot of things and I told him that I know that and I hope that people from outside understand that as well.

"That’s happening with Willian.

“Training, he’s training properly. His behaviour? Top, as always.

"Training? Fantastic. For me, it’s just a question of timing.”

Despite this backing from Edu, a section of Arsenal fans have called for Willian to be sold in the January transfer window.

Away from those dissenting fans, the report from the Spanish publication claims Willian is not happy at Arsenal and Betis are ready to make a significant financial commitment to sign him.

However, it adds that his wages of £181,000-a-week could be a stumbling block.

The report claims he may need to lower that demand to join the Spanish club.
