Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham set for £15m TV bill as Man United announce financial results

The financial strain of the coronavirus crisis is beginning to hit clubs hard.

And the Premier League could be set to take another big hit if Manchester United's financial results are anything to go by.

No football has been played in England since the beginning of March, meaning all clubs have lost out at least two months' worth of expected revenue.

The Premier League are committed to ending the 2019/20 season, when it is safe to do so, with the UK Government giving the green light for matches to be played behind closed doors in June.

However, that will have a negative effect too, with matchday revenues plummeting as a result.

And the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham look set to foot a £15million broadcasting bill too as a result of companies like Sky and BT missing out on coverage.

Every club is given a set amount for broadcasting rights at the beginning of the season, and now, as a result of lost revenue for the TV companies, clubs will have to pay some money back.

Manchester United's financial results stated that "broadcasting revenue for the quarter was £26.0 million, a decrease of £27.8 million, or 51.7%, over the prior year quarter, primarily due to an estimated £15.0m Premier League rebate due to broadcasters, following delay and broadcast schedule changes to the 2019/20 football season, non-participation in the UEFA Champions League, and the impact of playing two fewer Premier League away games".

Premier League clubs have been told they must pay back in the region of £300million to £350million to broadcasters, which equates to the estimated £15million per club United mentioned in their statement.
