Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham fans could be impacted by Premier League Netflix-style decision

The coverage of the Premier League could be about to change in a way which would have a significant impact on supporters of Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and their rival fans.

New Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has revealed how the competition is considering launching its own digital service.

This Netflix-style service would see the Premier League stream live games and other content directly to supporters.

Masters says this potential move would allow the Premier League to charge fans directly for a 'Premflix' channel rather than sell the rights to TV companies.

Masters said: "During the last [rights bidding] process [for the 2019-22 seasons] we spent quite a lot of time and invested a lot of resources in building our expertise and capacity in 'direct-to-consumer’.

"We considered whether strategically it would be the right time to test a few markets then and decided not to. We were ready last time and we will be ready next time should the opportunity arise.

"Eventually the Premier League will move to a mix of direct-to-consumer and [traditional] media rights sales."

The Guardiola has reported that the Premier League makes £3.1 billion a year from TV rights, of which £1.4 billion comes from foreign buyers.

Although the chances of an online digital streaming service happening in the immediate future are slim, Masters has suggested that some countries may soon be watching games shown by existing TV broadcasters and others streamed directly by the Premier League.

"Secured licensed revenue and direct-to-consumer revenue are entirely different strategies — the transition from one to the other, if and when it ever happens, would be a big moment," he added.
