Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham face more fixture chaos as King Charles III coronation confirmed

Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham and the rest of the Premier League are all set to be impacted by King Charles III's coronation after it was confirmed to take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

Government officials have been arranging plans for the ceremony after the completion of the UK's 10-day period of mourning following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The current Premier League schedule has all three London clubs set to play on the day the coronation will take place, meaning all fixtures will be postponed and rearranged.

After claiming the throne on Thursday, September 8, King Charles will officially be crowned King alongside his wife Camilla, Queen Consort. The Premier League, and sport in general, is once again expected to come to a standstill as it did in September.

Arsenal are set to travel north and face Newcastle United on May 6, in what could potentially be a key match in their title challenging season. Chelsea are scheduled to play Bournemouth on the south coast, whilst Tottenham are set to play hosts to London rivals Crystal Palace at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Premier League clubs are already facing a hectic fixture schedule due to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar next month, with the Premier League expected to announce their official plan of action for the affected fixtures in due course following consultation with the government. There had been initial fears for the FA Cup final following suggestions King Charles' coronation could be set to take place on May 14, though that is no longer the case after Buckingham Palace released a statement outlining their plans.

The official statement Buckingham Palace read: "Buckingham Palace is pleased to announce that the Coronation of His Majesty The King will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023.

"The Coronation Ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, London and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The Ceremony will see His Majesty King Charles III crowned alongside The Queen Consort.

"The Coronation will reflect the monarch's role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry. Further details will be announced in due course."
