Arsenal Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool to go ahead as Jurgen Klopp's side discover punishment

Arsenal's trip to Anfield to face Liverpool in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at the end of the month will take place after Jurgen Klopp's side were handed a fine for fielding an ineligible player.

The worst case scenario for last season's Champions League winners was expulsion from the League Cup after Klopp brought Spanish midfielder Pedro Chirivella off the bench in the third round against MK Dons.

The 22-year-old did not have the proper international clearance to play for Liverpool, after spending last season on loan at Spanish side Extemadura.

However, rather than the extreme measure of an expulsion from the rest of this season's Carabao Cup, Liverpool have been handed a £200,000 fine, with half of that amount suspended for a year after the EFL reached a decision on the matter.

This means that Arsenal's tie against Jurgen Klopp's side at Anfield at the end of the month is all set to go forward, with Unai Emery's side having home games against Crystal Palace and Wolves either side of the cup competition.

Sunderland were previously found guilty of fielding an ineligible player in 2014 when Ji Dong-Won appeared after returning from a loan spell without proper clearance. However, they were also able to avoid a ban from the competition.
