Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang makes statement on trophies and his career

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang insists he does not have to win trophies to be considered a top striker.

The Gunners attacker is the joint-top scorer in the Premier League alongside Jamie Vardy this year on 17 strikes, but will have just one year remaining on his Arsenal contract at the end of this season.

Mikel Arteta stated this week that he wants to keep Aubameyang "under any circumstances", but the Gunners face a tough struggle to secure a Champions League place this season.

The likes of Barcelona have been linked with a move for the Gabon international, who insists that he will not need trophies to be considered a great striker.

Mikel Arteta on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's future

"I'm a striker so I will defend my side - I don't think you need trophies to be a top striker," Aubameyang told Sky Sports.

"Of course, it can help you but we've seen a lot of great players that didn't win trophies but we respect them because of their quality.

"You don't need to win trophies, but if you win it, it's better."

Arsenal have no chance of winning the Premier League this season, and were knocked out of the Europa League by Olympiacos, with Aubameyang missing a golden chance in the last minute of extra-time at the Emirates Stadium.

The 30-year-old admits that the miss affected him in the days following the defeat, but says the reaction from his teammates and the fans made him proud to be a Gunner.

"I had the chance again and I missed it," he added. "I was feeling like: 'Ok, this is my fault', and I think this is human.

"That's why I was really devastated. But this is football and sometimes that happens. The next day, I was back in training again.

"I think [the feeling stayed] for one or two days. I was sleeping really late at night thinking about it but after that it was ok, because I have my family that's here and they give me some power and I try to be strong for them.

"I received a lot of love from my teammates and from the fans. I received a lot of messages and at the end, I feel proud to be a football player for Arsenal and we keep going."
