Arsenal can secure £18m windfall as Roma return for transfer negotiations

Arsenal are approaching the latter stages of what has been a busy summer transfer window, with midfielder Lucas Torreira one player who could finally be set to leave the club.

Technical director Edu has been tasked with rebuilding a squad that has failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in each of the last five campaigns.

The Brazilian has added English centre-back Ben White, Belgian starlet Albert Sambi Lokonga and Portuguese left-back Nuno Tavares to the ranks this summer and football.london understands that a deal to bring Real Madrid playmaker Martin Odegaard to the Emirates is also nearing completion.

However, the Gunners have struggled to offload their unwanted players, with young midfielders Matteo Guendouzi and Joe Willock the only first-team players that have left the club on a permanent basis, meaning the likes of Hector Bellerin, Willian and Alexandre Lacazette are all still at the club.

Earlier in the summer, it looked as if Granit Xhaka would be departing the Emirates, with Serie A outfit AS Roma keen on signing the Switzerland captain before agreeing personal terms with the 28-year-old.

However, the two clubs were unable to agree on a fee and football.london understands that Xhaka has now signed a new contract with the Gunners, meaning Roma are still in need of a central midfielder.

This now opens the door for Arsenal to try and sell another fringe midfielder to the Giallorossi and Italian outlet Calciomercato now claims that Roma boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bring Torreira to the Stadio Olimpico this month.

The tough-tackling Uruguayan, who is valued at £18million by Transfermarkt, hasn't played for the Gunners since July 2020, having spent last season on loan with Spanish side Atletico Madrid after falling down the pecking order under head coach Mikel Arteta's stewardship.

Torreira previously admitted that he would love to play for Argentine giants Boca Juniors and also refused to rule out a return to Diego Simeone's Atletico.

"I'll be clear. I've always dreamed of playing in Boca but now is not the time I belong to Arsenal and I have two years left on my contract", Torreira said earlier this summer.

“I do not rule out continuing to play in Atleti."
