Arsenal can save millions if Raul Sanllehi reverses Ainsley Maitland-Niles transfer decision

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been told he can leave Arsenal during the summer transfer window.

That's according to the Mirror, who claim the Gunners are open to a departure if an acceptable offer is lodged - amid links to fellow Premier League side Brighton and Hove Albion.

It's not the first time the 22-year-old's future at the Emirates Stadium has been called into question in recent months.

Mikel Arteta on summer plans and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

The Athletic reported a couple of months ago that Maitland-Niles as well as Matteo Guendouzi were seen as potential candidates to be sold in order to raise funds so that head coach Mikel Arteta can bolster his squad in other areas.

With that said, this was before Maitland-Niles proved to be a tremendous asset for the Gunners in their FA Cup success - which includes wins over Man City and Chelsea in the semi-final and final respectively.

In both games, Maitland-Niles operated at left-wing back and has recently stated that he's happy to play out of position.

"It doesn’t bother me what people label me as because I think the management know themselves," he told The Mirror. "Ok I was late, maybe once during this manager’s time. It was a mistake, I spoke to the manager and put my hands up and took the consequences.

"I would play right-back every week if I had to. I am not really fussed. The main thing is being out there with the team and helping them win games.

"If the manager says to me 'Ains you gotta go in goal this game I will put the gloves on and I am ready to rock n roll.'

"That’s where some people may have misjudged what I said before in a different interview.

"Obviously I do prefer playing central midfield but that is not to say that I don’t want to play right-back or that I’m not going to do the job there if the manager asks me to."

The 22-year-old is clearly highly-rated by Arteta.

"Absolutely, [he was magnificent. And I was sure about that with the way he’s training, the way he’s changed his mentality and his mindset," Arteta told reporters after the semi-final win. "He has everything, he has great qualities, I believe in him.

"I had to give him opportunities and today he took it with both arms. He had a really good performance."

And replacing him with a player of equal versatility - not to mention being homegrown - could cost the club a fortune in the transfer market.

Although, by reversing this transfer decision, head of football Raul Sanllehi can save the club millions.
