Arsenal boss Unai Emery suggests Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be his next club captain

Unai Emery has suggested that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could become Arsenal captain on a permanent basis.

The striker captained the side as Arsenal were held at home by Wolves, with Granit Xhaka left out of the squad.

Xhaka’s outburst at Crystal Palace last weekend leaves his future as captain in doubt, and Emery suggested that Aubameyang may be a contender to take over.

“He could be,” Emery said after the 1-1 draw with Wolves.

“I think he can take that responsibility and today he did that.

“He is one of the captains and I think he can take that responsibility but we are going to analyse the match first and the situation for the next matches and decide.”

Emery favours a five captain set-up, with a primary leader supported by four others in a leadership team.

Xhaka had been named as the primary captain, with Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette, Hector Bellerin and Mesut Ozil (who returned to Emery’s first-choice side yesterday) the other members of the leadership group.

Laurent Koscielny, Arsenal club captain last season, departed for Bordeaux in the summer.
