Arsenal boss Unai Emery names the ex-Liverpool star who inspired his coaching philosophy

Unai Emery reveals he looked up to John Toshack in the early stages of his football career in Spain.

The Arsenal boss was a youth graduate at Real Sociedad during Toshack's second spell at the Basque club, but failed to make much of an impact at first team level.

Toshack played for Cardiff, Liverpool and Swansea before forging a successful coaching career in Spain with Real Madrid and Real Sociedad.

The 70-year-old has also managed Wales and Macedonia at international level.

And Emery, who was asked by Arsenal.com about his biggest coaching influences, named the former Kop legend as a major inspiration in his path to becoming a manager.

Arsene Wenger not ruling out leading a team at next World Cup

"I learned with every coach I had in my career and for example, one who was coming to Spain and Real Sociedad, John Toshack," the Gunners boss said.

"He's from Wales and really he transmitted to us a very deep culture from England in the football, in San Sebastian, in Real Sociedad.

"I learned a lot with him but I learned from a lot of coaches and we have very good examples with [Pep] Guardiola, with [Diego] Simeone, with Luis Enrique, with Jurgen Klopp and really I watch a lot of work, of matches from other teams and other coaches to see how they can manage each moment and I learn and I use them to improve me."
