Arsenal boss Unai Emery explains why he's 'gained respect' for Chris Wilder's Sheffield United

Unai Emery says that he feels the quality of English coaches is great as he prepares to lock horns with Chris Wilder at Bramall Lane.

Wilder is currently one of nine British managers in the Premier League and his bullish approach to Sheffield United's return to the top flight has left a positive impression on the Spaniard.

The Blades currently sit a place below Manchester United in 13th and have produced admirable performances against top four challengers Liverpool and Chelsea this season.

"We have gained respect for them," Emery said.

"They have a big atmosphere in their stadium and their coach's career is amazing and how they are playing is the same to how they played in the Championship.

"They play with confidence and their style is to be offensive but they are still defensively strong."

Emery on Ozil's difficult start to the season

Born in Stocksbridge, Sheffield, Wilder took charge of his boyhood club who were still in League One limbo in 2016. Promotion in his debut season launched the Blades into the Championship in 2017 before they secured their return to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

That three-year journey in which Wilder picked up last season's LMA Manager of the Year award hasn't gone unnoticed by Emery and neither has the emergence of British coaches across the leagues.

"He is 52-years-old, a similar age to me (47) and he has a big history behind him as both a player and a coach in England," he added.

"There are very good coaches in England with good experience and strong histories.

"Also, I love the fact that young English coaches are so prepared. I think now, the quality of the English coach is great."

Eight games into the 2019/20 campaign and despite signing ten players in the summer, Wilder has kept the core of his promotion winning side in his starting lineups.

Billy Sharp, Oliver Norwood, Jack O'Connell and Dean Henderson still form the Blades' spine. Along with their supporting cast which includes wing-backs George Baldock and Enda Stephens, have caused havoc for sides all over the league table, especially at Bramall Lane.

Although they have just one home league win, Emery is aware that Sheffield United's performances may have merited more than that.

"They (Sheffield United) had a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace where they were organised," the Spaniard said.

"They lost to Leicester but they might have deserved more. They lost to Southampton but it was an equal match and against Liverpool, they lost 1-0 but played well.

"After analysing them we will use our gameplan, quality and skills but we know it is going to be difficult and we will need to be very competitive for the whole 90 minutes on Monday."
