Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta provides latest injury update as Slavia Prague test looms in Europa League

Arsenal are facing an anxious wait regarding the injury sustained by Kieran Tierney during Saturday’s heavy loss against Liverpool.

The highly-rated left-back started for Mikel Arteta’s side at Emirates Stadium, but was replaced by Cedric Soares shortly before half-time as he limped off having appeared to sustain a knee problem following a robust challenge from James Milner.

Speaking after the game, Arteta confirmed that it was indeed a knee issue affecting Tierney, with Arsenal yet to discover exactly how much time he stands to miss.

“He felt something in his knee,” Arteta said. “He was in pain so it looks like he will be injured but we don't know how long for.”

Tierney has established himself as a key player at Arsenal under Arteta and his absence at the start of the year with a calf knock and then lower leg strain was keenly felt.

The Scottish international also suffered with a groin issue earlier this season.

Tierney will now be expected to miss Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first-leg tie against Slavia Prague, with the return leg in the Czech capital coming a week later on April 15.

Mid-table Arsenal also have further Premier League matches against Sheffield United, Fulham and Everton to come before the end of April.

The Gunners were already without Bukayo Saka, David Luiz, Emile Smith Rowe and Granit Xhaka against Liverpool, with Arteta stating that he “did not know” if any of that quartet would be fit for the visit of Slavia Prague to north London.

There is a chance that Luiz may not play again this season and could require surgery to repair a knee injury.
