Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has already summed up what Joe Willock would provide Newcastle United

Newcastle United fans may well be wondering what to expect from Joe Willock.

The Magpies are closing in on a loan deal for the Arsenal midfielder, who has 78 appearances to his name for his boyhood club.

Despite playing that many games he is yet to fully establish himself in the Gunners' starting line-up, with 38 of those appearances coming from the bench.

Whilst he is a midfielder, he has played in a variety of positions across the middle of the park, and that has led to plenty of debate over where he is best suited.

As such, whilst Newcastle are set to bring in a player with Premier League experience, his actual role in a side is relatively undefined - and the next three months at St James's Park could go some way to helping him find a regular position.

Willock's manager at Arsenal, Mikel Arteta, has already nailed his colours to the mast over where the 21-year-old will play in future.

The midfielder was mostly used as a box-to-box midfielder when he first broke into the Gunners' starting XI, but Arteta has tried to use the youngster in a No. 10 role.

Speaking to Football London last season, Arteta said that, whilst he may not always be able to play Willock in that position, it is where the player will eventually end up.

"I think so. I think he’s perfect to play in that role. I think he’s got incredible physical attributes but as well he’s a very intelligent boy," he said.

"He learns really quickly, he’s very willing, I think he’s developing really really well and I’m very pleased with him."

It echoed what Arteta had said previously when playing Willock in the No. 10 role in an FA Cup tie against Bournemouth - a move that raised eyebrows among some fans.

"I really like Joe in that position," he explained. "I think he can be an outstanding player playing there and he showed that tonight."

This season has seen Willock flit in and out of the team, mainly being utilised in Europa League games.

The Gunners were handed a relatively easy group in Europe, playing Rapid Vienna, Dundalk and Molde, but, to his credit, Willock still netted three times in five appearances.

That form is yet to translate to regular Premier League appearances, with the midfielder being handed just two starts in the league so far this season.

Arteta has explained it is a case of needing consistency - something he will hope to find on loan.

"I really like the approach they’re youngsters having, to make the difference, not just to play and be there," he said.

"They want to make a difference for the team. They’re playing with a lot of personality.

"Keep doing what he’s doing consistently and his chance will arrive."
