Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta goes back on selection promise as worrying statistic emerges

Mikel Arteta endured a torrid first full season in charge of Arsenal.

The Spaniard failed to capture a major trophy as the Gunners stumbled to an eighth-place finish in the Premier League, resulting in them failing to qualify for European football next term for the first time in 25 years.

Arteta's tactics have come under increasing scrutiny, with his overly cautious approach a cause for concern to the majority of Arsenal fans.

The north London club struggled offensively last season, netting a measly 55 league goals, their worst tally since the 1995/96 campaign.

The former Manchester City coach has also been frequently questioned for his unusual team selections and a worrying statistic emerged from Twitter user Orbinho regarding his inability to select the same starting lineup.

In fact, Arteta started the same side on just two occasions in last season's Premier League, meaning the Gunners played a different starting XI in 37 of their 38 league fixtures.

The former Everton midfielder actually attributed his side's poor form to their inconsistent starting team back in February but still failed to field the same lineup after that, with the same 11 named for fixtures against Manchester United and Aston Villa before Christmas, winning 1-0 and losing 3-0 respectively.

"It is what it is. We have to adapt and we have other players trying to do the job," Arteta told reporters before the Gunners' home clash with Leeds United.

"But at certain moments you need some consistency... you see all the successful teams, they have some consistency in the starting elevens and get that chemistry, that cohesion, that togetherness there. We haven't been able to do that."

Arsenal will be looking for more consistency next season but the team Arteta will have at his disposal for their opening fixture against newly-promoted Brentford could be unrecognisable from last term.

They have already announced the signings of Portuguese fullback Nuno Tavares and Belgian midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga, with Brighton defender Ben White also nearing a move to the Emirates Stadium.

As football.london reported back in May, the north London club are also targeting a goalkeeper, a right-back and a creative midfielder in a bid to bridge the gap between them and last season's top-four sides.
