Arsenal behind the scenes: New Arteta contract, Calvert-Lewin transfer, Mavropanos' development

Arsenal are approaching a run of games that will define their season.

Elimination from the FA Cup means the Gunners have a rare full week to prepare for the visit of a Leeds United side who leapfrogged them in the Premier League table with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Monday night.

It somehow finished goalless when the two sides met at Elland Road earlier in the campaign, but Arsenal are in need of all three points to kick-off a difficult run.

After Leeds, Mikel Arteta's side have a two-legged Europa League round of 32 tie against Benfica and face the likes of Manchester City, Leicester City, and Tottenham before the international break.

What shape will the Gunners be in come the end of March?

Prior to the weekend's game against Leeds, football.london's Chief Arsenal reporter Chris Wheatley gave his thoughts on some of the big talking points at the Emirates right now during a Q&A with fans on Monday where he was asked questions on topics ranging from Arteta's plans for the summer transfer window to a possible new contract.

Here is what he had to say about what is going on behind the scenes in north London.

Is there any chance of Odegaard joining permanently or Calvert-Lewin joining?

Chris Wheatley said: "A decision will be made whether to pursue a permanent deal for Odegaard once his loan spell ends. It's dependent on his performances over the next few months, but he has a good chance and looked bright when he came on against Villa on Saturday.

"Calvert Lewin is an excellent player but Everton would command a huge fee for him so I don't think that one is likely to happen anytime soon."

How long is KT out for?

Chris Wheatley said: "Tierney has a leg injury (not related to the calf issue previously reported) which is down to fatigue. He's played a lot of games, needed a rest and is hopeful of being back for Leeds."

Is there any chance of Marc Overmars coming back to Arsenal as a board member or even as technical director?

Chris Wheatley said: "Unlikely at this stage. Edu is technical director, Richard Garlick is coming in as Head of Operations and Vinai Venkatesham is chief executive.

"There are no plans to add anyone else as far as I know."

Is it true Mikel Arteta is in line/talks for a new contract at Arsenal?

Chris Wheatley said: "Haven't heard that and would be surprised if it was the case at this point in the season.

"However, KSE (Kroenke Sports & Entertainment) have full faith in him and there are no plans to make changes to the coaching staff as things stand."

Does Mikel Arteta follow Mavropanos' development in the Bundesliga?

Chris Wheatley said: "Absolutely. Arsenal are keeping tabs on the progress of Mavropanos at Stuttgart. He had surgery on a meniscus a couple of months ago but he's back now and looks promising.

"He should get a chance to impress the manager when he returns for pre-season training in the summer."
