Arsenal and Unai Emery 'discover' how much it will cost to sign Dayot Upamecano next summer

Unai Emery, Raul Sanllehi and Edu were busy in the summer to make the transfer window an exciting one for Arsenal.

All the way up until deadline day on August 8 deals were being done.

In total there were as many as six new faces at the Emirates Stadium - Gabriel Martinelli, Dani Ceballos, William Saliba, Nicolas Pepe, Kieran Tierney and David Luiz.

The latter was very much a surprise, but Emery was keen to sign a centre-back following the departure of Laurent Koscielny coupled with a poor defensive record across all competitions last season.

According to reports in Brazil, via Sport Witness - Robert Arboleda was viewed as an alternative to David Luiz in the build up to transfer deadline day for Premier League clubs.

In addition, the report stated that Arsenal approached Sao Paulo three days before the window closed for a season-long loan deal with an option to buy.

A staff member is reported to have said: “We were approached by Arsenal three days before the end of the transfer window in England."

For some reason the deal hit a snag and the Gunners ended up signing Luiz from Chelsea for £8m.

However, Nicola claims that Arboleda is still 'for sale' and it remains to be seen if the north London outfit return for the 27-year-old when the winter transfer window opens in the new year.

Even with Luiz's arrival the Gunners haven't looked any better defensively and with the January transfer window just a couple of months away, there's a chance to dip into the market for an upgrade.

But could the Gunners reignite their interest in another central defensive target?

Manchester United 1-1 Arsenal: Unai Emery press conference

Prior to signing Luiz, Dayot Upamecano was being heavily linked with a move to the Emirates.

In fact there was talk of a swap deal involving Emile Smith Rowe, but in the end Arsenal had a bid - thought to be in the region of £50million - rejected by RB Leipzig.

The Bundesliga outfit were said to be holding out for a fee close to the defender's release clause of £82m.

That may have been a mistake in Leipzig's part as reports in France are claiming that Upamecano could leave for a cut-price fee next summer.

According to L'Equipe - via the Sun - Upamecano's release clause will be slashed to £53million if he does not sign a new deal before the end of this season.
