Arsenal suffer Tottenham transfer trick as Houssem Aouar is used as makeweight in negotiation

Tottenham are attempting to steal a march in the transfer race for Lyon star Houssem Aouar.

Aouar has been a long-term target for north London rivals Arsenal and it is reported that Mikel Arteta has made his interest in the player known to the Ligue 1 side.

Reports in France suggest that both Premier League giants have now declared their interest in the 23-year-old.

TF1 state that Lyon are holding out for around €25million but may accept a lower offer of €20million late in the window.

It marks a u-turn from the French side, who last summer reportedly demanded a whopping €60million for the midfielder.

t’s only two years since Tottenham shelled out more than £50m to sign Tanguy Ndombele, but reports in France also note that he could be used as a makeweight to bring Aouar to the club.

However, Lyon are likely to demand cash amid the ongoing financial troubles plaguing Ligue 1.

They have been hit hard financially by both Covid-19 and the turbulent negotiations regarding TV rights.

That could force them into a bargain sale this summer.

Additionally, ESPN report Liverpool are looking to find a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum who joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer this summer and could turn to the in-demand Frenchman.
