Arsenal and Mikel Arteta handed major injury boost ahead of Leeds United clash

Arsenal have been handed a welcome fitness boost ahead of the Premier League clash against Leeds United after the international break.

The two teams are separated by just two points in the table and will go into the game at Elland Road on the back of heavy defeats last time out.

Marcelo Bielsa's side were beaten 4-1 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park - their third defeat on the spin - whilst Arsenal didn't fare much better at home to Aston Villa as they slumped to a disappointing 3-0 loss.

But there's good news on the fitness front for Mikel Arteta ahead of the game which takes place a week on Sunday.

Calum Chambers could be in contention to make his long-awaited first-team return.

The versatile defender has been on the sidelines following a serious knee injury sustained against Chelsea just under a year ago, but started in the U21's Papa John's Trophy - formerly the EFL Trophy - clash against Gillingham on Tuesday evening.

And he got 45 minutes under his belt before being replaced by Levi Laing at half-time as the youngsters recorded a penalty shootout win following a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Barring any setbacks, Chambers could very well be in Mikel Arteta's matchday squads after the international break with the Gunners pretty much in action every three days until the new year.

Having the 25-year-old available for selection again will increase Arteta's options at centre-back.

Currently, Arteta can choose between William Saliba, Gabriel Magalhaes, David Luiz, Rob Holding, and Shkodran Mustafi, with Pablo Mari also close to being fully fit.

Chambers had been expected to return to action towards the end of the calendar year.

But that could now be sooner after being back in full training alongside the likes of Holding, Saliba, Willian, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for a few weeks.

Chambers actually started the first home game of Arteta's reign, before injury cruelly cost him the remainder of the 2019/2020 campaign.
