Arsenal and Mikel Arteta could get Mohamed Elneny boost for Leeds trip after Egypt announcement

Mohamed Elneny is set to fly on a private jet back to England as he attempts to be cleared to face Leeds United this weekend.

It was confirmed on Wednesday that Elneny, currently on international duty with Egypt, had tested positive for coronavirus for a second time.

The Gunners midfielder featured in the Pharoah's first African Cup of Nations qualifying match against Togo last week but tested positive on Monday.

He has since been self-isolating in Cairo and returned a second positive test.

It had looked like he would miss the game at Elland Road on Sunday - but there is still a chance he could play.

The Egyptian FA are laying on a private jet for Elneny and Liverpool compatriot Mohamed Salah to fly back to London on Friday.

Salah, like Elneny, has twice tested positive for the virus and has been self-isolating with mild symptoms last week.

The duo will fly from Hurghada Airport to London in an attempt to be passed fit for their respective matches this weekend.

Both players will be tested on arrival back in the UK with hopes that they may record negative tests.

The Egyptian FA, however, indicated that Elneny and Salah both once again tested positive on Thursday evening.

In a statement on Facebook this evening, the Egypt FA announcement: "In the framework of coordination between the Egyptian FA and the English football clubs, it was agreed that Mohammed Salah and Mohamed Elneny will travel tomorrow from Hurghada Airport on a medical-equipped private jet, hoping that it will [enable] both of them to be negative soon and able to get back to [participation for] their teams."

The organisation added: "The Egyptian [FA] has been in constant contact and coordination with the two clubs since each player was infected with the coronavirus.

"While the two players conducted a new swab for each today, their results were positive."

It is anticipated that Liverpool and Arsenal will split the cost of the private flight, which is usual protocol when Premier League players fly back together from international action.

Yet it remains unlikely that Elneny will be able to feature against Leeds.

Premier League protocols dictate a player must quarantine for 10 days after an initial positive test, with a retest on the 10th day needing to be negative in order to allow a return to action.

With Elneny's first negative test coming on Monday, the Leeds game would fall within the 10 days of isolation period stipulated by the Premier League.
