Arsenal and Man United dealt huge James Maddison blow ahead of summer transfer window

Arsenal and Manchester United are among the clubs who have been dealt a blow in the race to sign Leicester City star James Maddison.

The midfielder has been linked to both clubs, and reports have suggested that they will be the frontrunners in a battle to sign the 23-year-old in the summer.

Maddison joined Leicester in 2018 from Norwich for an initial fee of £21million, and he has since excelled as one of the bright young talents in the Premier League.

What Arsenal need to do during the winter break

The midfielder has also gone on to represent England at senior level, and so any transfer would likely prove to be expensive, with Leicester not willing to sell their star man - who is under contract until 2023.

But any sides considering a move for Maddison are now set to be delivered a fresh blow.

According to the Telegraph, Maddison's representatives are in advanced negotiations with Leicester about a new deal for the young star.

Maddison is said to be close to signing the new deal, which would significantly boost his earnings and allow Leicester some peace of mind over his future, in the short-term at least.

United are said to be eager to sign Maddison still, despite the new addition of Bruno Fernandes in the January transfer window.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are said to be considering long-term replacements for Mesut Ozil, who has provided just one assist in his 15 Premier League appearances this season.
