Arsenal and Liverpool set for transfer battle over Sevilla's Diego Carlos

Arsenal and Liverpool both have their sights on Sevilla defender Diego Carlos this summer.

The Gunners are eyeing defensive reinforcements with their leaky back four proving an issue throughout the season.

Mikel Arteta has a host of centre-halves to choose from at the Emirates but is set to lead a summer overhaul, reports the Telegraph.

His side may lie in Carlos' transfer fee with the 26-year-old having a £68m release clause in southern Spain.

Sevilla may be tempted to accept a slightly lower fee of £54m should a potential suitor come knocking.

Carlos has a long list of admirers in Spain and the Premier League after helping the Andalusians secure Champions League football.

Arteta and his director of football Edu know that Arsenal will be working on a reduced budget this summer which may price them out of a move.

The Gunners may be able to afford Carlos though should they successfully offload the likes of Matteo Guendouzi and Mesut Ozil who have both fallen out of favour.

Even so, Liverpool could provide competition for the Sevilla star and have the lure of being champion of England.

Jurgen Klopp supposedly sees the Brazilian as the ideal partner for Virgil van Dijk.

The German has toyed with several combinations at the heart of defence as Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren all accompany the Dutchman.

Liverpool chose not to bring in any major new signings last summer as they stuck with the team who won the Champions League.

It proved to be the right decision but the Merseyside outfit are not expected to be as quiet this time round.

They have been heavily linked with Bayern Munich's Thiago who has told the Germans he wants to leave the club.
