Arsenal and former Celtic star Kieran Tierney thanks manager for return to action

Kieran Tierney has spoken of his gratitude to Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta for restoring him to the first team.

Ex-Celtic left-back Tierney was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise disappointing evening for the Gunners, who went down 3-0 to Man City in their first game since the lockdown.

Former Rangers midfielder Arteta handed Tierney his first league appearance since December, and fans praised the Scotland international's performance despite the result.

For his part, Tierney was glad to be back in action. Speaking to Arsenal TV, he said: " First of all we're very disappointed with how the game's finished.

"We;ve worked so hard the lasy few monts, and to have such a setback so early in the game is never easy, especially against a team like Man City.

"You've not got fans in there either, so it's always a miss when there's no fans.

"Nothing really went to plan. That happens in football, you need to deal with it.

"Tonight we gave everything we could, and things went wrong at the wrong times and we never recovered."

Asked how he felt after making his first start for six months, Tierney said: "I felt good. I felt as fit as I could be at this time.

"Matches are going to get me match fit and I've done all I coiluf possible to get fit for the match.

"The manager's trusted me to put me in and I'm very grateful. It's been a long six months and a hard six months, but I've got there in the end and I'm just happy to get some minutes in the game."
