Arsenal and former Celtic star Kieran Tierney says he received threats before move

Kieran Tierney has revealed he received threats as he prepared to leave Celtic for Arsenal.

Tierney has become a key player for Mikel Arteta's side, winning an FA Cup medal at the end of his first season and being voted the club's Player of the Month for June.

The 23-year-old was a major success at Celtic and an integral part of five league title wins, but some fans were angry with his decision to join Arsenal.

Speaking on the Open Goal Keeping The Ball On The Ground podcast, Tierney said: "It was just sad the way it ended. People turning and all that.

"Some people make it out to be what it's not and it's not that at all.

"Weeks before when Arsenal had bid people were like that 'you're a rat if you go, you're terrible, you're never a Celtic fan.

"I'm like 'this is breaking my heart reading this' and as soon as this gets announced it's going to blow up.

"And the worst thing I did when it got announced was go on Twitter. (There were) thousands of tweets, threats and all sorts.

"When I went home two days later after signing, there was spray paint on the walls, 'Judas' outside my bit."

Scotland star Tierney tipped Neil Lennon's side to win a historic tenth successive title this season. Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, he said: "It's going to be tough. There's going to be so many challenges on the way. Everybody's out to stop you. Everybody's out to stop Celtic.

"Celtic know that, and Celtic just rise up to the challenge every time they're asked, and I think that's going to be the difference."
