Arsenal and former Celtic star Kieran Tierney explains Tesco bag that became a meme

Fans are accustomed to seeing footballers arrive at grounds carrying designer wash bags.

That wasn't the case with Kieran Tierney when he arrived at Bramall Lane for Arsenal's FA Cup tie against Sheffield United in June.

Images of the former Celtic left-back carrying his gear in a Tesco bag went viral, and were hailed as a sign of Tierney's humility.

Tierney, who was named Player of the Month for June by Arsenal fans, has now elaborated on the Tesco bag.

Speaking on the Open Goal Keeping The Ball On The Ground podcast, Tierney said: "I don't think it's that bad.

"I got slagged rotten from the boys and on the internet but it's sound.

"It was my boots. At the start of all this we had to carry all of our own stuff, our boots and that.

"And I'm not sitting washing my boots every day so I'm carrying my boots from training the day before and they're stinking so I was like 'Get them in that Tesco bag and wrap it up'.

"I think there was a bit of chocolate in there as well for after the game."

Scotland international Tierney joined Arsenal from Celtic for £25m in 2019.
