Arsenal and Chelsea set to offer guard of honour to new Premier League champions Liverpool

Liverpool’s Premier League title win is now confirmed after Manchester City’s defeat to Chelsea on Thursday night, and Jurgen Klopp’s side still have plenty of the season remaining.

The Reds were handed the title when the Blues beat Pep Guardiola’s team 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, meaning the reigning champions can no longer catch their rivals at the top of the table.

It brings an end to the 30-year wait Liverpool fans have had to endure for a league title, and with seven games still to go this season, there’s plenty more time to celebrate before the end of the season.

During those final seven games, the Reds will be presented with a guard of honour by each of their remaining opponents as the newly-crowned champions.

Ironically, the first side who will be lining up to congratulate them will be City when the two sides meet at the Etihad Stadium next Thursday.

Also among the sides set to give the Reds a guard of honour are Arsenal, who host Klopp’s men on July 15, while Chelsea make the trip to Anfield just a few days later on July 18.

And given the Blues’ role in Liverpool’s triumph, there might be some thanks shared among the hosts for their visitors that day.

The guard of honour is not compulsory, but the tradition is usually honoured in the Premier League, and all of Liverpool’s remaining opponents are expected to offer their congratulatory token.

The Premier League though still need to confirm the protocol, with the new rules since the season resumed seeing teams come out separately prior to kick-off and maintaining a form of social distancing.

The other sides set to offer Liverpool a guard of honour are Aston Villa (July 5), Brighton (July 8), Burnley (July 11) and Newcastle United (July 26).
