Arsenal accused of loaning Henrikh Mkhitaryan to Roma despite him being injured

Roma boss Paulo Fonseca has suggested Henrikh Mkhitaryan was injured when he joined on loan.

Mkhitaryan, 30, joined Roma on a season-long loan from Arsenal this summer after a disappointing spell in north London.

The Armenian international scored on his Serie A debut and provided another assist in the weekend win over Lecce.

But after undergoing scans, it was confirmed Mkhitaryan had suffered a thigh strain and will be out of action for at least three weeks.

And Roma boss Fonseca suggested he was struggling with an injury when he arrived from Arsenal.

Ahead of his side's Europa League clash with Wolfsburg, Fonseca was asked if he was already injured when he joined the club.

"He was already complaining of a discomfort to the adductor and with this density of matches it was clear he could feel some discomfort,” Fonseca said.

“As a preventive measure I had kept him out against Atalanta and he had recovered well. Then he got hurt against Lecce.”

Roma have enjoyed a strong start to their Serie A campaign, winning three of their six matches so far and sit in fifth.

They thrashed Istanbul Basaksehir in their opening Europa League group stage encounter and will be confident of another win against Wolfsburg.

Roma must do without midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini, as well as Mkhitaryan, in Germany after he was ruled out for almost two months.
