Arsenal accused of lacking class as permanent exit of popular figure is confirmed

Arsenal have been accused of lacking class over their handling of Gunnersaurus.

As reported by The Athletic, Arsenal’s COVID-19 cuts claimed another victim in the shape of Jerry Quy who has dressed up as the dinosaur mascot since its inception in 1993.

In August, the north London outfit announced the decision to make 55 redundancies due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic on the club’s finances and Quy’s Gunnersaurus role - for the time being - has been deemed no longer necessary.

As expected, this decision prompted a massive response from fans on social media as many couldn't believe this happened on transfer deadline day.

However, Mesut Ozil - one of the club's highest earners - stepped up with a kind gesture.

"I was so sad that Jerry Quy aka our famous & loyal mascot @Gunnersaurus and integral part of our club was being made redundant after 27 years," Ozil tweeted. "As such, I’m offering to reimburse @Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy as long as I will be an Arsenal player.

"So Jerry can continue his job that he loves so much."

And a month after this pledge, the mascot took to his own personal Twitter account to confirm his return.

On Twitter, posting a picture of himself, Gunnersaurus wrote: "Back at the Emirates Stadium today," whilst putting his thumbs up to signal his return.

Although, it would appear all is not what it seems.

Daniel Quy, Jerry's son, has issued a statement on Twitter to offer Arsenal fans "some clarity and closure" and revealed the club haven't been able to include his Dad in their 'new normal' part-time plans.

In addition, he states that his Dad hasn't been offered the chance to hand over his legacy.

Then in effectively confirming his Dad's departure from the Gunnersaurus role where he states "all good things come to an end", it's what is said earlier that doesn't make good reading for Arsenal.

"To 'act with class' is an Arsenal value that I remember well from my time from working at the club, and my Dad certainly honoured that," Daniel wrote. However, I don't feel this was reciprocated in how his journey ended."

Daniel also reveals that all funds received from a GoFundMe page and Ozil will be donated to charities close to Jerry's heart.
